Year 2 Fire Visit

Year 2 were lucky to have a visit from fire crew who work at the local fire station.

Year 2 were lucky to have a visit from fire crew who work at the local fire station. The man and woman who came spoke lots with us about how to keep safe at home where fire is concerned.

We were able to take part in lots of discussion and got the chance to ask and answer many questions too! It was very useful to learn about fire at home in this way as the messages were clear and we learnt a lot about avoiding danger with fire

.

A video about Francis the Firefly and her mischievous friend Cocky Roach taught us lots about how important it is not to play with fire and be persuaded by others to do so. There was also a clear message about what to do if somebody suggests anything silly and dangerous like playing with matches as shown in the video.

Seeing an example like the one in the clip really made us think about what is right and wrong with fire.

Following an important talk and the sharing of some very useful advice on smoke alarms and how to test or get one fitted in every home the fire crew showed us the clothing they have to wear using a lucky volunteer.

First the heavy boots and thick trousers had to go on. Then the fire proof jacket and gloves with hi-vis stripes to be easily seen. Then the hard hat and visor for head protection which all has to be put on really quickly in a real emergency.

At the end of our talk the fire crew took us outside to show us their fire engine and we even got to hear the siren they use as they left the school car park.
